Altruism is the principle and practice of concern for the well-being and/or happiness of other humans or animals above oneself.

WTF IS ALTruISM?

Is it bad that I just learned and even heard this word…

I would like to think I am naturally altruistic but I’m not sure I could say the same in my years of Adderall and Vyvyanse addiction. I was so focused on number 1, that I didn’t have room to be.

PRE ADDY FREE

The sad truth is that addiction makes you selfish; your thoughts and actions are constantly consumed by the drug, leaving little room for the consideration of others. But the good news is that no one is “wired” to be selfish to the core. In their book, "Wonder Drug: 7 Scientifically Proven Ways That Serving Others Is the Best Medicine for Yourself," Anthony Mazzarelli, M.D. and Stephen Trzeciak, M.D., share the insight that "Thinking only of one’s own gain is not woven into the fabric of anyone’s soul... we are all just people who get to make choices about our behavior."

LIVIN ADDY FREE

Now that we’re livin Addy Free and our thoughts and actions have space for more than just our old obsession, let’s dive deep into where we are now on the altruistic spectrum, and where we want to be.

KEEP IT REAL

As my mom always says “keep it real”, which basically means look at the evidence and the data and not your ego. The Alturism Quiz is a great place to start.

P.S……

If this quiz scares you…. then that’s a sign you need to take it

Whats next?

Once you have taken the quiz, I would suggest listening to this podcast by NPR Life Kit. While the podcast is more about donating money, volunteering is just as beneficial plus time is money, amirite? I like the podcast because with all of the causes out there, it helps break down what resinates most with you and will ultimately bring you the most joy and purpose.
